Arsenal had to face Chelsea under some bad circumstances. Two of their star players were absent from the starting XI. Namely:
- Mesut Ozil who was out with a slight knee problem
- Alexis Sanchez was left on the bench.
But surprisingly, the result wasn’t as bad as we expected it to be. We drew at Stamford Bridge where we had failed to get a single point since 2011. It was also the first time Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side didn’t score a goal at home under him.
Everyone was all praise for Arsenal and Arsene Wenger. Because they had overcome a difficult obstacle.
Even Gary Neville praised Arsenal for their admirable performance.
There was one player whose performance impressed Arsene. And it’s none other than Aaron Ramsey.
Aaron Ramsey’s performance was most noteworthy. And it stood out from everyone else’s.
Here’s what Arsene had to say about him:
‘Aaron had a disciplined performance (at Chelsea) and that was absolutely vital for us,’ Wenger explained.
‘If he starts from a strong defensive position, he can be dangerous against anybody.
‘He has a huge influence going forwards, we know that, and we know that he can contribute to that.
‘The strength in his game was of course his usual top-quality physicality. But he’s more focused on technical quality in his first touch and that makes him more dangerous.’
Ramsey has had his injury problems in the past which prevented him from being a regular for Arsenal. We always knew he had quality. But injuries got the best of him.
Wenger’s team is well known for playing attacking football. But in a game which called for a defensive approach, Ramsey was the man who came through. He continuously bossed the midfield.
Most importantly, this feat earned him his manager’s praise.
We hope to see such performances in the future from Ramsey. This probably isn’t the last you’ll see of him. This could be just the trailer of what he’s to offer over the course of the season.
